The Mayor’s Health Academy

The Mayor’s Health Academy is an evidence-based community health program founded in 2015. The mission is to provide children and families with access to health care, nutritious food and educational opportunities that lead them to healthy, physically-active lifestyles. It consists of two components, ABC for Fitness and Food & Fun After School. Combined, both components strive to improve the lives of Lancaster’s younger generations.

ABC For Fitness

The in-school component of the Mayor's Health Academy is ABC for Fitness, which was developed by Dr. David Katz from Yale University. ABC For Fitness is a fun, simple, program that uses brief "bursts" of physical activity during each session of the school day. It is designed to take the time that teachers spend getting restless students to settle down, or distracted students to concentrate – and convert it into structured, productive bursts of physical activity spread over the course of the school day. Ideally, these “activity bursts” will add up to at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity.

Food and Fun After School

The after-school component of the Mayor's Health Academy is inspired by Food and Fun After School, which was developed at the Harvard University School of Public Health. Food and Fun is designed to develop healthy habits out of school time. There are eleven teaching units that help program coordinators infuse healthy snacks and recipes, physically active games, and creative learning activities into regular program schedules.
